Having lived extra-constitutionally all along–and having deployed the constitution only politically in order to eliminate their adversaries–some wayward Tegaru activists now seek to defend Abdi Ille and his war on Oromos through the constitution. This is rather disingenuous but not entirely unexpected.

We have always known that Abdi Ille’s war was THEIR war against the #Oromoprotests–and they have repeatedly proven that fact numerous times over.

That said, the Federal Government should act responsibly by taking all the necessary constitutional safeguards against abuse of rights. It should also ensure that all the procedural requirements are properly heeded to.

In particular, it may need to swiftly seek a federal intervention order from the HOF so that it can act legitimately to arrest the chaos in the region. Alternatively, it can issue a state of emergency that applies specifically to the areas affected by the unrest and authorize the Federal forces to act within that mandate without obliterating the states’ autonomy.

Bottom line: One can’t correct an unconstitutional monstrosity through unconstitutional measures. Enough damage has already been done for years through mobilizing law’s unjust violence against the people.

These wayward activists should be told to stop spreading violence in the name of the constitution. And the federal authorities should take care to act constitutionally only from a genuine commitment to its principles.

Yes, constitutional integrity matters. Nonetheless, wanton destruction through war, such as the one conducted by Abdi Ille, shouldn’t be tolerated in the name of the constitution.
